Leeds Oncology Society

Leeds Medics Oncology Society is a student-led society at Leeds Medical School. It’s a relatively small society consisting of a President, Secretary, Treasure, Publicity Representative, Intercalation representative and Years representative from years 1 to 5. In Leeds, medical students do not get much exposure to oncology until later years (year four onwards). Hence, our society focuses on raising awareness and giving some exposure to this speciality.

Some of the events that can be expected from the Leeds Oncology Society are: A day in the life of an Oncology: An annual event held in term 3, where we invite Consultant oncologists, Registrars, Academics Oncologists and Oncology surgeons to speak about their work and much more. Charity events: Last year, we held two successful charity events, a Bake sale where we raised money for charities, including pink events, a breast cancer charity and the Trussell Trust.

Educational events: We also work with other organisations and societies nationally. For example, last year, we collaborated with NAMOUS (North and Midlands Oncology University Societies), where our president helped organise a national conference. Previously we have worked with BONUS (British Oncology Network for Undergraduate Societies), a prestigious national society with various medical students' educational and career opportunities.

All our members on the committee are high achievers in their own right, and several of our committee had done an 8-week summer research project in Clinical Oncology at the Royal College of Radiologists. There are many opportunities that the society will provide for those interested in an academic career or a career in Oncology. We has a very active social media presence and will organise various events throughout the year. We will be recruiting for a new year one representative too.
