GMC

The General Medical Council

Who We Are

Originally founded in 1858, the GMC is the independent body that regulates doctors, physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) in the UK in order to support good, safe patient care.

We set the standards doctors, PAs, AAs and their educators need to meet, and help them achieve them. If there are concerns these standards may not be met or that public confidence in doctors, PAs or AAs may be at risk, we can investigate, and take action if needed.

What We Do

  • We manage the lists of registered professionals in the UK

  • Set and maintain the professional standards for doctors, physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs)

  • Oversee doctors’, physician associates (PAs)’ and anaesthesia associates (AAs)’ education and training

  • Suppor doctors, physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) in reflecting on and improving their work

  • Investigating and acting on concerns
