President’s Welcome

Congratulations, you have finally made it to medical school! I know this may be an exciting moment that many of you have waited for for a long time, but now the real hard work will begin.

My name is Liv and this year I am president of MSRC this year. I have completed 3 years of medical school and this year I am intercalating in medical education (so I may be seeing some of you in your classes!). I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to Leeds medical school where you will study for the next 5 years!

MSRC stands for Medical Students Representative Council. This is our main role: to represent you as students. We work very closely with the medical school to provide feedback on your experience as a medical student in Leeds, and to help try and improve it as much as we can. We are here to support you through the whole course, as we have representatives for years 1-5 as well as for intercalation.

I started at medical school in 2019, so all my years at Leeds have been affected by the pandemic. This year, we are hoping to run a fully normal fresher’s programme for the first time since I was a fresher! We have lots of events planned for you all, such as the medics and dentist’s freshers fair, where you can find over 50 societies which are tailored to a medical student’s timetable! Taking part in societies and finding time to do activities outside of study is so important during your time at Uni, especially as this is one of the main ways you can make friends. There are also lots of university wide societies you can join to meet some non- medic friends!

I know that medial school can be tough, especially in the first few weeks when everything is new. You may be living in a new city and not know anyone else to begin with. If you find yourself struggling at any point during this time, please reach out! We have a welfare rep on our committee, as well as lots of resources on our website to help you out.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the amazing MSRC committee, who have already been working super hard to prepare for fresher’s week!

I wish you all the best of luck with the next 5 years of your lives, and I can’t wait to meet you all.  Medical school is very challenging but also very fun, and you will make some lifelong friends along the way!

 Best wishes,

Liv
